What began as a sequel to Super Mario World but is in fact a prequel to the entire Mario canon has since been retconned out of the Super Mario series. Meh, as much as I love continuity, it doesn't really bother me.
Yoshi's come in many colors so it only makes since for these covers to match the colors of the different Yoshis.
